EPICE was launched in 1999 with the idea to create pieces of textiles for pleasure: subtlety of colours, softness of touch, refinement of weavings.
Bess Nielsen graduated from the Copenhagen School of Design and from the Stockholm School of Design and Advertising. Right from the start of her career, she specialised in Indian textiles, and is now recognised as an expert in this field. Bess’ Indian connection originates from both a great professional admiration for India, a country boasting the world’s greatest textile culture, and also from a personal empathy for Indian philosophy. All-round artist, Bess has directed documentary films and has organised exhibitions around Indian themes in Paris, Copenhagen and Los Angeles museums and galleries.
Jan Machenhauer also graduated from the Copenhagen School of Design and has launched his own successful line called Zone 1. The line is very architectural, using some of the finest fabrics around. He also has extensive knowledge of, and fascination for Indian culture. He won the prestigious Danish Art Foundation’s “Three Years Award”, presented by the Queen of Denmark, honouring his innovative creations. He has long been recognised as being at the forefront of Danish design.
What makes their collaboration such a success is that as well as their great mutual respect for each other’s talents, they complement one another perfectly – he is more structured, she is more instinctive. |
